My Philadelphia grandparents, who summered near Seal Harbor for many years and gave my generation a lifetime of happy memories of this beautiful part of Maine, used to take us once every August to visit the Rockefeller Garden - it was part of our summer ritual. They felt our sense of aesthetics and love of nature needed to be cultivated even as very small children, and that this garden was one of the great places of wonder on to start - something for which all of us are forever grateful.

As we walked through the garden once, marvlling at its secret passages, Buddhist statuary, English gardens and Maine moss, pines and fern, my straight-laced grandmother (1899-1895) whimsically offered the following commentary that remains legendary in our family even today :

"The Rockefeller Garden is what God would have done, if he'd had their money!"

Wonderful! I have studied Farrand quite a bit and I did a program on her last year. I finally got to see Dumbarton Oaks last year and it was a dream come true. I have some photos from that visit on my blog.
